CHAPERONE POLICY - INFORMATION FOR OUR PATIENTS

This is to advise our patients that should your GP need to undertake an intimate examination the doctor will give a clear explanation as to why this is necessary and give you the option of having a fully trained Chaperone in attendance.

If this is declined the GP will record this on your medical records.

Chaperone policy

Chaperones

At Len Valley Practice, we are committed to maintaining your comfort, dignity, and privacy at all times during your care.
Our healthcare professionals are trained to offer a chaperone during any personal, intimate, or potentially sensitive examination, procedure, or consultation.

What is a Chaperone?

A chaperone is a trained member of our clinical team who is present during an examination to provide reassurance, emotional support, and to ensure that appropriate professional standards are maintained.
Our trained chaperones are usually nurses or healthcare assistants who understand the role and the importance of patient confidentiality.

When a Chaperone Will Be Offered

A chaperone will normally be offered:

  • Before any intimate examination, such as breast, genital, or rectal exams.
  • When a procedure may be perceived as embarrassing or uncomfortable.
  • When a patient or clinician would feel more comfortable with another person present.

You are entitled to request a chaperone at any time during your consultation if you wish.

Children and Young People

For the examination of a child or young person under 16, consent from a parent or legal guardian is required before proceeding. A chaperone will also be offered in these cases.

Friends or Relatives

You are welcome to have a relative or friend present during your consultation or examination if you prefer. However, for the purpose of formal chaperoning, it is more appropriate for a trained member of staff to be present.

If a Chaperone Is Not Available

If a trained chaperone is not immediately available, we will offer to reschedule your appointment for a time when one can be present, whichever option you prefer.

Confidentiality

All practice staff understand the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality and professional boundaries. Anything discussed or seen during your examination will remain confidential, in line with NHS confidentiality policie s.
